This video is important for two main points:
1. Sergeant Jenkins must be able to accurately recount and explain what he observed, based upon the totality of the circumstances, that caused him to use force. His training, experience, and knowledge as a sergeant with LVMPD is important and must be recognized.
If an event is not properly recounted and explained, a peace officer may suffer the scrutiny of today's social media influence. Often, the public does not fully understand or receive the full facts of a scenario, but are still quick to pass judgment or offer a more "reasonable" course of action.
2. We will always endorse changing the tactical or strategic plan before using force. Frequently using force rather than systematic tactics (like our seminar "Simpatico") can lead a person down a path that will inevitably lead to professional, emotional, social or civil harm.
In this scenario, with a subject who has already committed violent acts, we think Sergeant Jenkins used appropriate force. Some say he should have "tazed" him. If you agree, think about the potential for greater injury by causing a person to become rigid and fall onto asphalt.
Sergeant Jenkins actions were controlled, start to finish.
