Amy Segui began her career in higher education and emergency response for colleges and universities, supporting students and staff by enhancing safety and security on campuses through emergency response protocols and strategies. In this role, she served as a conduct adjudicator for everything from behavioral issues to major crimes. She was also responsible for training students, student staff, staff, and faculty regarding all components of emergency response including fire extinguishers, blood-borne pathogens, and hazardous materials, among other relevant skills. Her other duties included conducting health, safety and security inspections to identify and correct deficiencies in overall campus safety, and planning and executing the annual campus Emergency Simulation.
While she originally intended to continue a career in education, she instead made the move to join the fire service after a devastating fire hit her hometown. Since then, she has moved through the ranks from Firefighter to Fire Engineer, to Community Risk Reduction Specialist / Deputy Fire Marshal, and currently serves as the Assistant Fire Marshal and Fire Investigator at the Petaluma Fire Department. While helping to lead her team and increase the safety of her community and department, she also serves as the Coordinator of her regional Fire Investigation Task Force and instructs Fire Investigation courses for her region as well as state-wide through the California Conference of Arson Investigators.
Her tenure in emergency response has equipped her with invaluable insights into crisis management, rapid decision-making, and effective communication during high-stress situations. Her multidisciplinary background in both education and public service has given her unique insight into human behavior, communication and conflict dynamics, and the intricacies of interpersonal and organizational relationships.
Among many qualifications and certifications, Amy has earned her Bachelor of Arts in English & Writing with a focus in Education, a Minor in Psychology, and a certificate in Philosophy from Southern Oregon University. She earned her Master of Science in Higher Education and Conflict Analysis & Resolution from Nova Southeastern University. She is a certified Military Emergency Management Specialist.
Amy’s goal is to motivate, inspire, and educate students and colleagues of all disciplines and walks of life with skills drawn from her own real-life high-intensity encounters to foster safer and more understanding professionals.
